State of the Campaign - Second Public Report

The 2017 United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley fundraising campaign goal is $1.1 million. Even though United Way has exceeded their goal of 1.1 million for the last two years, this year reaching goal could be difficult without the ongoing support of the entire community.

Previously, part of the United Way campaign goal was made up of donations by government employees through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Over the past 3 years, the CFC has been undergoing a restructuring, with this being the first year funds raised from local federal employees are managed by the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area rather than UWNSV. Federal employees are still able to give locally but those funds won’t be accounted for through the local United Way. United Way has anticipated these changes since the announcement was made; and through the past two campaigns have been able to narrow that gap, although United Way still faces an estimated $75,000 deficit as a result of this restructuring.

In order to make up this deficit and achieve this aggressive goal, United Way will need support from local businesses through fundraising campaigns, corporate gifts and through individual donations. Last year, United Way faced a 17% increase (equal to more than $110,000) in funding requests from local nonprofits. Many of these local nonprofits also saw a government funding cut in the last year, adding to the funding deficit and requests for support for United Way. United Way anticipates an even larger increase in funding requests for 2018, and worries that the need for support will once again greatly surpass available funding.

With one month left in the fundraising campaign, United Way has raised $808,271 or 73.5% of the stated goal. The following divisions of fundraising groups comprise the totals dollars raised thus far.

 Top 20: $476,532 or 82.4% of divisional goal

 Major Firms: $71,824 or 65.3% of divisional goal

 Commerce/Small Business: $16,946 or 37.7% of divisional goal

 Professionals: $40,807 or 80% of divisional goal

 Education: $57,490 or 81% of divisional goal

 Individual Giving: $54,254 or 67.8% of divisional goal

 Special Events: $64,446 or 77.6% of divisional goal

United Way NSV would like to call to the community for support – Help us reach our local fundraising goal and make measurable impact on the lives of our neighbors.

“This year’s campaign theme is “United We Fight. United We Win.” I really love the message behind this theme because it describes our community perfectly. United Way aims to be a catalyst for change in our community by bringing people together – united - to fight our community’s most critical needs. When we - as business leaders, community members, individuals, mothers, fathers, and friends - unite together in such a way, we will win. United, we will make our community stronger, healthier, and more sustainable.” Said Susan Brooks, 2017 United Way Campaign Chair and Senior Vice President of Contact Center Operations at Navy Federal Credit Union.

Businesses are encouraged to offer their employees the opportunity to give through a workplace giving campaign and corporate giving. Small businesses are invited to join the new 365 Small Business Circle by giving just $1 a day for a year. Young adults in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to give a gift of just $250 and join the Society of Emerging Leaders. Every dollar given to the United Way is able to be invested into $4 worth of community impact through the Community Impact Grants. Give easily online at UnitedWayNSV.org/donate.
