One third of Virginians are employed full-time, but cannot not earn enough to afford a budget designed just to survive, let alone that half of Virginians do not have a rainy day fund. When a household cannot address financial emergencies or save money for the security deposit and first month of rent which are necessary to obtain housing, eviction and homelessness loom. This population was recently named ALICE © by United Way: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. This week, Frank and I are going to take the challenge of living on a SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) budget of $5/day/family member (maximum benefits for a family of 5 are $760/mo). As we share with you what we are learning this week, we would like to ask you to help us raise $800, which a typical security deposit for a 2-bedroom apartment in our town. This money will go to our local United Way to a fund that will assist households living in their cars, motels, or other unsafe situations with security deposits.
