Did you know: 40% of people in our community are struggling to make ends meet. We call them ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed). ALICE works hard to support their families, but makes too much to qualify for government benefits, so their struggle is unseen to most. A short paycheck, car repair, or medical bill could send them into poverty – or worse, homelessness. Families with children make up the largest portion of ALICE households in Virginia, and half of them are headed by single mom's. I can't imagine paying $600-$800 for David's daycare on just my salary. Daycare takes up a huge chunk of the budget, so it's easy to see why many families struggle. My goal is to raise $365.50, which is the average cost for one week of daycare for two children! United Way is working hard to help ALICE families weather emergencies and reach financial stability. I’m proud to be part of these efforts. Through the One Black Dress campaign, you can help too!
