Elise is living on $4.50 a day

I’m taking this challenge to raise awareness about food insecurity and to hopefully destroy some of the stigmas surrounding people who need public assistance. Hunger spans across all races, ages, genders, locations, and education levels. Life can be unexpected and unpredictable, and when life throws you a curve ball, sometimes access to food can be the first thing to go. My other motivation is to just simply get back to my roots. When I started working as a college graduate, I was in a tough place. I was 100% ALICE—working a low paying, entry level job, having to be thrifty at every turn to stretch a dollar. At that point, I had no choice but to eat on less than $4.50 per day. As you can imagine, my spending (especially on food) has really relaxed as my income has grown.

I took on the SNAP challenge, because with my current pregnancy, my life is revolving more and more around food - like what foods are good, what are bad and what I want that very minute. I am incredibly lucky that at this point in my life I am able to indulge in what I want, not having to make accommodations or concessions for my cravings and aversions. I am also able to buy organic and nutritious food that will be good for me and my small human that is on the way. But for many women, that is simply not an option. I am taking on the challenge of eating on less than $4.50, most importantly, to be more thankful for what I have. Every dollar that you give towards my goal of $630 will help local families in our area. The $630 I am trying to raise can feed an ALICE family of four, with an infant needing formula, for an entire month.
