Community Impact & Agency Designations

Making the Greatest Local Impact

Unrestricted gifts provide United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley with the greatest flexibility to address our community's most pressing needs. These gifts allow United Way to invest where resources are needed most, respond to emerging challenges, and maximize every charitable dollar by minimizing administrative costs. For these reasons, unrestricted gifts are strongly encouraged.

Donors who wish to support a particular area of need are encouraged to direct their gift to one of United Way's Community Impact priorities:

  • Healthy Community
  • Youth Opportunity & Education
  • Financial Security
  • Community Resiliency

This approach honors your philanthropic interests while allowing United Way to strategically invest in high-impact local programs and initiatives that advance these priorities across the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Donors may also choose to designate their gift to a specific qualified nonprofit organization. Because agency designations require additional processing, verification, and administration, donors selecting this option should retain a copy of their pledge for their records. United Way may contact donors within 60 days of receiving campaign pledge information to verify designation details, confirm eligibility, and ensure the gift is processed in accordance with the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley Designation Policy.

To ensure sufficient funds have been collected, distributions of designated gifts will not begin until at least 50% of the donor's pledged contribution has been received. Designated gifts are generally distributed twice annually, in July and December, and remain subject to pledge collections, donor verification, and United Way's established distribution schedule.

By choosing an unrestricted gift—or by investing in one of United Way's Community Impact priorities—you help reduce administrative costs, strengthen local nonprofit collaboration, and ensure resources can be directed where they will have the greatest impact for children, families, and communities throughout the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
