Need a One-Time Boost? Explore the Modest Needs Self-Sufficiency Grant

At United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, we know that sometimes one unexpected bill — a medical copay, a car repair, or a missed rent payment — can throw a hardworking family off balance. Many local households earn just enough to be ineligible for traditional assistance programs but still struggle to cover emergencies.

That’s where Modest Needs’ Self-Sufficiency Grants come in.  This is a trusted national program vetted by United Way Worldwide that helps working individuals and families facing short-term financial shocks stay stable, independent, and on their feet.

🏠 What the Self-Sufficiency Grant Covers

This grant is not a loan and never has to be repaid. Funds are paid directly to the vendor (e.g., your landlord, utility company, mechanic, or hospital). Common examples include:

  • Past-due rent or mortgage payments that threaten eviction

  • Car repairs needed to stay employed

  • Essential medical or dental bills

  • Utility shut-off notices or major household repairs

🧭 Who Can Apply

You may qualify if:

  • You are currently employed or living primarily on a fixed income (disability, retirement, etc.)

  • Your household income is above the poverty line but below the area’s median (you don’t qualify for most public aid)

  • You can document a short-term financial crisis caused by something outside your control (medical issue, job interruption, unexpected bill, etc.)

🪜 How to Apply

Applying is simple and done directly through Modest Needs:

1. Click “Apply for Help” and create a free Modest Needs account.

2. Complete the online application, including your proof of income, household bills, and vendor information for payment.

3. Once submitted, Modest Needs will review your request and contact you if additional documentation is needed.

Tip: Be prepared to upload recent pay stubs, lease or mortgage statements, and the specific bill you’re requesting help with.
