Juneteenth: Freedom and Equality

Today, we join the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a significant day in American history. On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, reminds us of the enduring fight for equality and justice.

At United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley, we honor this day by reflecting on our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable community. We recognize the ongoing challenges faced by Black communities and stand in solidarity with efforts to promote social justice and eliminate systemic inequalities.
